ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported NFL commissioner Roger Goodell could allow the 49ers outside linebacker to return a week or two before his nine-game ban is scheduled to end next month.

Smith is scheduled to be activated Nov. 10, but he could play as soon as Nov. 2 against the Rams if Goodell reduces the suspension and Smith stays out of trouble, according to the reports.

Smith was suspended for violating the league’s personal conduct and substance-abuse policies. He was arrested in September 2013 on charges of drunken driving and weapons possession. He reached a plea deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to 11 days of work release.
